Fuel tanker falls in Benue killing about 30 and over 60 injured persons.

Yesterday, 1st of July, 2019, a fuel tanker fell at Ahumber village in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State killing not less than 30 persons and about 60 persons suffering different kinds of burns.

According to Vanguard, an eyewitness said the fuel tanker was coming towards Makurdi, when it slipped and fell off the road as a result of the driver trying to avoid the numerous potholes on the road.

The eyewitness said after the truck fell, the villages ran to the place with buckets to get the fuel coming from the tank, maybe they thought it was diesel or kerosene.

While they were still fetching the fuel, the tanker blew up, a bus heading to otukpo was also affected, the explosion burnt about 30 persons to death and over 60 were left with burnt injuries, said the eyewitness.

Mr. Aliu Baba, the Benue State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed the incidence; he said the victims have been evacuated to hospitals by his men.

The commander said the real numbers of the dead were yet to be known at that time as the fire was raging.

He said men of the fire service were trying to put out the fire, and it was a pity that the tanker fell where people owned businesses and goods were lost to the fire.

The police PRO, Deputy Superintendent Catherine Anene, told the press that details of the incidence had not reached their command.
